We are well into July, and still (just about) in the sign of Cancer the Crab, now nearing the end of the third decan, and the Sun is beating down in a real heat wave in England. We are in the baking, dusty, brain addling dog days.
I adore these times nowadays (usually), though in my younger days this would be the time when inspiration could find itself lost and adrift in a strange world. Marina Partridge says the following about this time (remember here that the sidereal starry zodiac does not overlay the tropical zodiac signs as the equinoxes have precessed):
“The Sun shimmers through the Twins, the Unicorn, the Great Bear, the Greater Dog and the Lesser Dog from July 13 to 22. These are the true lunatic Cancerians with the influence of the famous constellation of the twins Castor & Pollux. These twins were rivals, but also inseparable. We are dealing here with polarities; Good and Evil, the living and the dead, left-brain and right-brain, Lunar and Solar. Castor is thought to represent Apollo the sun god. The imagination is very strong here with the ability to capture it and put it into words. People born under the twins make excellent writers. Castor tends towards optimism, looking at the bright side of life and boosting esteem. He makes a great motivator and his skill was training horses. Pollux is the boxer and daredevil. His creative style is to explore the hidden, the shadow and subject matter that is deemed taboo. Pollux relishes in exploring the seedy side of life. When we overlay Cancer onto the twins we get a huge variety of moods. Cancer decan 3 therefore can be the moodiest of all the crabs, never knowing if they will be sunny or shadowy. Their emotions being so colourful are great for creativity. As artists they throw themselves right into their work, there is no holding back“
It’s a turbulent but creative picture which maybe gives “midsummer madness” a little background beyond the streakers on cricket pitches, and sun burnt seaside saturnalia, kiss-me-quick hats and fallen ice cream cones. The dog days can get saucy with a person’s sanity, but ultimately it’s up to you, and what you really need.
Into this, this year, has come a grand water trine, with Neptune in Pisces trine Jupiter (conjunct Lilith) in Cancer, trine Saturn in Scorpio, trine back to Neptune in Pisces. The Moon joined Saturn in Scorpio for a magical moment, while Mars has since joined Jupiter-Lilith in Cancer.
Heady, trippy stuff, and I have to say, I have been loving it. As it happens, it has also coincided with same-sex marriage being signed into law in the UK.
I hope you enjoy your dog days, that you dream well for yourself, wherever it needs to lead you, that you may have inspiration and a good chance of wisdom, your risks be worthwhile and lucky, and your self respect held well in a strong, good hand.
As we head to the other chamber of Summer’s heart we should remember. Our dreams and pleasures, yea our indulgences, they too hold a virtue and a wisdom. And neither madness nor sanity need have tyranny over that deeper well being, not easily defined, but seen through the haze of heat, and intuited in the out breathing of a still, warm night.
