If you follow astrology at all, then you’ll probably know that we are still going through the square of Uranus and Pluto in the cardinal signs of Aries and Capricorn. This is like the waxing part of the present Uranus-Pluto cycle, which began with their conjunction in the mid 1960s in Virgo. If it was the lunar cycle, this would be half Moon.
We’re all pretty well aware that the 60s had a reputation for social upheaval and transformation; amidst liberation politics, psychedelia and the “sexual revolution”, leftism and hedonism, war and peace protest, hippies and hell’s angels, the Vietnam War and spiritual and personal exploration. It did indeed seem to be part futuristic idealism, and part deep, dark mind fuck. I reached adolescence in the immediate aftermath, and I concur, though I really don’t know what it was like if you were living in Mongolia or Thailand. I’d be interested to know.
Now at the square, we are meant to be at a testing phase. All that came out of that time should be facing its first big crisis, its first really major separating of the wheat from the chaff, the realistic from the not tenable. For anyone who actually lived through the time, you’d have thought that whatever it was came out of the 60s got a pretty big slap in the face by the 80s, but that was just the semi-square between the two bodies. So this is way more challenging than the 80s was in that respect. Don’t gulp too hard yet though, I think it does get interesting.
When you introduce Uranus and Pluto into a conflicting equation, it tends to be kinda polarizing. You immediately imagine it as all Al Capone versus Nikola Tesla. Introduce Aries and Capricorn, and it is all about individual freedom versus corporate power, or something. But not so quick Don Quixote! All may not be quite what it appears to be.
I don’t doubt that there are some of those themes discernible, but thinking back to the time of the conjunction, and the testing theme, I see some other things. Us first generation activist hipster punks (I raise my hand in shame) watched many things parade as Uranian, ideological, liberational, compelling in their sense of moral truth. And we saw a lot that we liked which was damned Plutonic, as well as a lot that we condemned which was (actually) the same. Forgive us, we were dumb. Believe it or not, a lot of that stuff got carried through to the mainstream to varying degrees, even after we plebs had thought “you know what …..”.
Now the square has been happening for a while, what I see is a divestment. Stuff that we have been taught (don’t trust those frickin’ hippies man) was Uranian and cool and freeing and morally absolute was actually a lot to do with power and old fashioned get-your-privilege-here shit. And stuff that was meant to be about Plutonic threat, power and gratification was sometimes just a big idea, whether it was good or bad, and then sometimes it was just life. You see Uranus and Pluto were conjunct, it was bound to get fucked up, and they were bound to be wearing each other’s clothes. And now time is up, and we’re having to sort through the wardrobe, and face up to what things are.
Mind fuck is never an entirely bad thing, it always leads to some interesting stuff. But some of the stuff that your parents (or grandparents, or great grandparents) didn’t like about it, well they had a point. Especially if they belonged to a group that nobody thought was cool or righteous. And then again some of it was part awesome, because there is always some reality in there somewhere, always someone who gets what’s beyond the tide.
This square will shred a whole load of stuff, and it will take the blinders off too. It won’t all look pretty. And no one will look good. But we’ll get past a hell of a load of bullshit, and maybe we’ll get some real, truthful, powerful change become possible, a little way down the line, when we have the humility to not be drunk on power, righteousness and novelty.3rd November 2014; 3rd paragraph, 3rd line, “possible” changed to “tenable”.
